Bought this online, because there need to be more copies of this wonderful book traveling the world on BookCrossing.

I read this book earlier this year and had this to say:
I LOVED THIS BOOK.

It's the very best book version of a fanfiction that was written by a fictional character in a book based off a book series that doesn't exist that is modeled after a book series that does exist that I've ever read, that's for sure!

It's got (not necessarily in this order): goats, magic, boykissing, goats, an ultimate struggle of good against evil, amazingly complex Rainbow Rowell characters (TM?), angst, humor, great plot twists, and so much more!

Even though it's supposed to be a little like Hogwarts, it ends up being a complex and wonderful universe that can stand on its own. I love the creativity regarding how magic works and how the wizards operate within it. I also love watching the Harry (Simon) and Draco (Baz) characters go from mortal enemies to... something more. And it goes the places one wants fanfiction to go--obvious obsessions, confessions of emotions during late night discussions, and love with caring and self-sacrifice and no strings attached. It's beautiful.

I was absorbed entirely by this book while reading it and now I need more people in my life who've read it so I can discuss and fangirl properly. I also want to reread fangirl for all the little fanfic bits now that I'm even more in love with these characters. But, after I do so, I fear I'll want to read Carry On again...

I'm claiming this hefty hardcover from the bookbox - looks like fun! (Edited to add the setup: in Fangirl (which I hadn't read when I first encountered Carry On), there's a wildly popular series of novels based on Simon Snow and his adventures at wizarding school, including an ongoing rivalry with vampire/wizard Baz. Yep, totally expies of Harry Potter and co. Anyway, in Fangirl the main characters have been writing fanfic based on this series for years and are devoted to shipping Simon and Baz - but real life begins to get in the way. In Carry On we get to read a more fully realized version of the Simon/Baz fanfic without any reference to its fiction-within-fiction origins, and it's great fun!)

Later: This was indeed a fun read, with plenty of nods to magical-boarding-school tropes but with its own twists and sensibilities. I liked the whole bitter-enemies-forced-to-be-allies vibe, and the switching viewpoints (Simon, Penelope, Baz - though he doesn't turn up in the first person until well into the book, Agatha, and... others whose existence is a surprise). And the plot's good, with suspense (of the will-we-survive kind as well as the will-they-or-won't-they romantic complications) and humor (lots of that) and some heartwarming bits. I'll definitely look for more of Rowell's work!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the book, with some entertaining tidbits.]

Ah. I usually enjoy Rainbow Rowell books. (It's the Nebraskan in me.) This one just didn't have the same charm for me. While an easy, fun read - it still felt to me like a poor man's Harry Potter. My sister wanted to read this as well, and I just couldn't recommend it.
