I mostly enjoyed this book. Well written, but I guess I found something missing. Still enjoyable. Enjoy.

I selected this book at today's meetupof BC in DC at the Potbelly's in Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. Thank you very much!

I grabbed this book because I really liked When We Were Orphans by the same author. However, when I got this book home and looked through it, it did not appeal to me. Hmmm?! I'll keep it moving, though,

A fantasy-style tale of post-Arthurian Britain. A mist has descended on the land causing Saxons and Britons alike to forget. To forget, not just the far past, but even events that just happened days and even hours ago. Some seem to be more prone to the effects than others. The main characters of the novel are a married elderly couple, Beatrice and Axl, who have started to have memories of a son. They believe he has moved to another village but don’t remember why he did so. They leave the safety of their village to find him and along the way become convinced that he is waiting for them. On their journey, they meet up with a warrior, young Saxon boy, and an aging Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur tasked with the killing of the dragon Querig.

I can see why this book has people polarized on how they feel about it. It’s a love it or hate it kind of book…well more of a love it or meh kind of book. You get it or you don’t.

For me…I’m lost amongst my own polarization. The first chapter was sooo boring I didn’t want to give the book any more of my time. Especially after reading Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go with its storyline of peripheral characters taking the spotlight. There’s a reason minor characters are not the stars of the book, because nothing happens in their story. There's no will to fight in them. Not fun to read. And that was what I thought I was getting with The Buried Giant. But I pushed past the first chapter to give it a fair try. And it did get better! The characters and their world was interesting. Seeing how they interacted with one another and seeing it from different perspectives was intriguing.

I didn't care for the writing style. Even though I’m fascinated to read old fairytales, they can, at times, be a bit tiresome in the way that they are told. The saving graces are the history, the brevity, and the morals. The Buried Giant had a similar vibe but held my attention much better despite the novel length.

At the end, I even shed a tear. The story quite surprised me, because I didn’t care for Never Let Me Go, I thought it would be more of the same. And it is a quiet story but one that I enjoyed overall.

...or was it all an older couple suffering different stages of Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia? And their one last trip together and being able to say goodbye? I like the fantasy story better so I'm going to stick with it.
