A Darker Shade of Magic: A Novel (Shades of Magic)

When I worked at Indigo, I would keep visiting this book on the shelf at the store and read the first few paragraphs about a coat that was so unusual and interesting that I just had to read the book! It demanded that I read it!
And I loved it! The characters were so compelling and real. Kell and Delilah sucked me in. They were likeable without being nauseating, flawed without being tragic and had such a great dynamic with each other through all the trouble and adventure. The magic system was unique and executed with perfection. And London! Not just one, but THREE London's! Each one different, but linked though magic.
I read this a while back, but just scored this paperback at a book sale for Bookcrossing.
From Indigo.ca:
Kell is one of the last Antari-magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.
Kell was raised in Arnes-Red London-and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.
Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

I am taking this fabulous book to our monthly Bookcrossing meeting at Cravings to find a new reader.
Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing July meet-up. Minvera101 sounded quite pleased with this series, so I can't wait to check it out.
I read this book right away after getting it, but totally forgot to write a journal entry. Whoops...
Anyway, this was an awesome book. The only reason it's not a 10 out of 10 is how long it took for the main characters to meet. Yes, that time is used to do some great world building, but I wanted to tension to ramp up quicker. As it is, Kell and Lila don't even realize that the black magic is spreading through Red London. That's my only complaint, though. I really appreciated that Lila was the more cut throat of the two; she wasn't some damsel that needed saving.
I read there are plans to make this book series into a movie. I would be totally on board for that.

This was a fantastic book. I especially loved the Londons and world building. Can't wait for book 2!
Side note -- skip the audio book on this one. I was not a fan of the reader's voice for Lila. Had to go back to paper.

Bringing to the August Calgary BookCrossing meetup.
I brought this home from the August meetup at Cravings. Funny - I was just reading out book titles from my son's bookshelf to decide long distance which ones he wants. There was this book. I laughed when he said I should read it - since I was sure it had just come home with me.
I actually listened to this book (downloadable from library) and it caught me up from pretty well the beginning. Imagine - different Londons in different worlds where only certain type of people could travel between. Mystery and quirky characters. Fun book.
I am taking this to the December meetup at Cravings Restaurant.
Picked up at Dec 2018 meeting of Book Crossing Calgary.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel, new and unique story. Looking forward to the next one!
Controlled release at local meet up.
Picked up at the January meeting, adding to my TBR pile.
