Wow, what an amazing story! I usually don't like it when books don't reveal much about their content before you start reading, but in this case I'm happy I hadn't read any spoilers! And I don't know how to say anything about this book without revealing too much, either... I guess you will have to read for yourself :-)
A little thank you for greenbadger - thank you for organizing, keeping track of, writing back and forth about, and not giving up on those rays!

Oh, how kind! Thank you very much, I'm really touched that you've done this. Really looking forward to reading this one. :)
I wasn't sure I was enjoying the first part of this book about Rosemary, the misfit girl whose brother and sister are both mysteriously missing. It seemed somehow to be missing any soul. And then suddenly, a little way in, comes a huge plot twist and it turns into a totally different book, when you find out exactly who is the soul who is missing. This is fascinating, enthralling, thought provoking. A wonderful book, thoroughly recommended.

Received today. Perfect timing!
ETA: The book is structured so we are landing in the middle of the story. I found the language most interesting - the plot & main characters however couldn't interest me enough to continue further than chapter 3 even on the second try.

Received today from Lamilla, thanks for the lovely stamps :-)
Reading all the comments before me here and on Goodreads, I thought this was going to be a fantastic book... Unfortunately, a bit of a let down for me. The story was fine, no big reveal as everybody keeps saying, just an explanation to the storyline.
I also got annoyed by some of the vocabulary I needed to check regularly.
All in all an OK book.
Ready to travel on...

This book has arrived. I've read it already but, as I enjoyed it so much the first time around, I'm looking forward to a reread before I pass it along.
This was a reread for me, and I enjoyed the book as much as I did the first time around, perhaps even more so. I liked very much the main character's voice and the quirky personalities of the other characters. I found the novel very thought-provoking, and when I'd read the book the first time, I was motivated to watch the Project Nim documentary mentioned in the reference section of this book. I also liked reading the author's commentary, which was not in the edition I'd read earlier.
Thanks, Icila, for providing this book. I will mail it to the next reader within the next few days.

This book is on its way to mcsar.
Thanks for the book. This one seems to have quite diverse feedback. I wonder which camp I will fall. I will start reading soon.
I liked this one a lot. It is such a joy to read everyone's favourite in this roundabout. The book started ok and got my interest, but I was still expecting something cliche, and then came the big reveal and the book took on new life. I read the book with no knowledge of its premise and that's the best way to go.

On its way to valpete.
Thanks for sending this along. I have read it three years ago. This is what I wrote on Goodreads at that time.
This is the story of Rosemary Cooke, her sister Fern, her older brother Lowell, her psychologist father, and her mother. It's an unusual story because Fern, virtually the same age as Rosemary, lives for the first five years of her life as part of an experiment to learn the effects of being raised within a human family— and the effect having a non-human "sister" has on Rosemary. I thought the book was completely believable and was fascinated by the experiment. I found myself sad at the thought of the treatment of Fern. Not an easy book to read, but brilliant! I can see why it was nominated for the Man Booker prize.

Sending this along as the June 1018 Roundabout book. Enjoy!
Book arrived today and sounds very interesting! I just started a review book but should finish it soon - now that I'm finally settled into my new home and work has slowed down a little I should have more time to read!
Finished this afternoon, and still digesting. I will admit that when the first big reveal about Fern came I was a little disappointed at the turn the plot was taking (the narrator suggests we, the reader, may have already figured out that reveal, but I sure hadn't). Regardless, I still enjoyed the book after that, especially when Lowell turned up. And I like the author's writing voice.
Arrived today
OK, I admit it, I didn't get the twist but apart from that the first half of the book didn't really grip me. In fact, once I was half way through, I carried it around for a few days without even opening it. According to other reviews this is a marmite* book. And I hate marmite. That said, at around P.208, Part V, you learn Fern's story. It is incredibly sad and moving and brought tears to my eyes. It reminds you of all the things you pretend aren't happening in the world. However the rest of the book really didn't reach me.
ETA - *Marmite (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite) divides people - they either love it or hate it.

Sending on in the roundabout.
Ooh, I already think I'm going to really enjoy this just from reading the blurb! Thanks for sharing.
I felt familiar with this book, having seen it around in the library and in bookshops for ages but hadn't actually read anything about it so I definitely hadn't anticipated what the plot twist was going to be - I have to say, I thought it was going to be either more sci-fi or else some kind of thriller like a child swap, so it did feel a little like an anticlimax for me as I'm not really an animal lover so didn't find the concept that compelling, but it was very well written and I enjoyed reading about the relationship between Rosemary and Harlow.

Received - thank you :)
I really couldn't get into this book and I gave it a good try - about halfway through I paused it to read something else with a deadline and realised that I had no driving urge to pick it up again. I did guess Fern's identity early on, and kept expecting another big twist. I didn't like Rosemary all that much either - whether it was because of the experiment she was part of, or just her own personality, I couldn't take to her at all.

I'm passing this on to Fifna today. I was really busy for the last few months and didn't do much reading. I'm sorry I stalled this.
And it arrived today, thanks Arvores! I read this book a couple of years ago. I'll see if I can find my review and add it here.
Edit: I can't find my review of the book, suffice to say I enjoyed it!
