I got this fair-condition hardcover from the ongoing book-sale at the Pelham NH library. I've read other books in the series, starting with The Anatomist's Apprentice. I've enjoyed some of the historical tie-ins in the stories - more so than the main character and his love-interest, as it happens - but while this book deals with the significant and often devastating results of the enclosure act that left many rural folk destitute, I didn't find it as compelling as previous books. And Thomas and his relationships just felt... tiring; he gets into scrapes that seem forced and illogical, and I just couldn't summon up the interest to care how or if he will get out of them. [Good thing, too; this book ends on a cliffhanger as the result of a duel; to learn the fate of the central characters one will need to find the next volume. I... don't think I'll bother {wry grin}.]

I plan to leave this book, bagged against the elements, on a bench along the esplanade; hope the finder enjoys it!
