the author didn't take many pains to make her main character very likable~ he comes across as sort of a selfish little pill. But in some ways, maybe that's more true to life than having him be good natured and charming. this was published in 1972, which perhaps explains why the author has the boy frequently tell his little sister to shut up and often calls her names. I don't think most current authors would consider that appropriate.
