I read this a while ago and honestly can't remember much of the story or my reaction. I know I got it after reading The Evolution of Jane by the same author, and since both are still hanging around, I must have had some positive feelings about it. It may have had to do with the fact that the main character owns a bookstore, and had an 11 year old daughter. My son was 11 when I got the book

However, I just got it back from bookcrosser bumma who told me in no uncertain terms she didn't like it. Since I hadn't registered the book yet, I will record her opinion here and not force her to journal it.

I guess I should re-read to see what I think...

From the Publisher
Smart, independent, and sexy, Helen MacFarquhar owns a tiny bookstore in an idyllic seaside town, where her life is exactly as she planned it, comfortable and full. But then an anonymous love letter arrives in her mail one steamy summer morning. Written by an unknown lover to a mysterious beloved, the letter becomes Helen's obsession. "How do you fall in love?" the letter asks. To her dismay, Helen finds out. Johnny is the college student who works in Helen's store, a boy with all the irresistible modesty and arrogance of youth. Helen knows she is too old for him, and too wise, but the letter's ardor is overpowering, and Helen is swept up in a fiercely tender love affair.

Headed down under via MarciNYC's Aussie mailbag.

Journal Entry 3 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Monday, July 26, 2004
yes marci, I too am tempted to read this BUT I am giving into that temptation. Be warned that it will be off the BXing radar for a while as it helps my Mt TBR reach for the stars. (Height joke)

Thought I would take this book for a ride and show Marci the bend in Kensington Road. I'll leave her to explain that to you bookczuk.
Kensington Road is one of the main arterial roads to and from the city centre. It is dead straight for say 10k...that's about 6 miles I think..then hits this little round about. In the distance you may be able to make out one of Adelaide CBD (=downtown) buildings. especially if you click on the photo and enlarge it.
On the round about are a couple of BXing books including this one. Interestingly enough the grass you can see is fake! Discovered only when putting the books there.
I didn't leave the books there but think that this place may have a future as a release zone.
Another photograph to follow.

Another view to show the books. Somewhere near here..within a couple of hundred yards is the long term home of The Don. He lived here for about fifty years and personally answered many thousands of fan letters per year.
The house was recently heritage listed despite the family (who still own the house) wanting to maintain their privacy. I went for a look, for BXing purposes, and couldn't find it but will ask some frriends who live in the area for some directions. Hopefully I can get a piccy for Marci soon.
And to underline the Bradman's record. Recently Damien Martyn fell 3 runs short of 3 consecutive test match centuries. The last person to do that was none other than DB in about 1948.
I am aware that this has nothing to do with the book but it makes an interesting journal entry and helps keep you guys informed.

Being entrusted to the postal service.
Hopefully I will meet it again soon in our summer holiday destination.
I will finally either read it or release it.
Thanks chucky. Hope you are well

Pretty exotic. And pretty and exotic. Will be a chance to show you cold people some sun.

coffin bay info

bear with me as I get the link right!

Journal Entry 9 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Saturday, January 1, 2005
There is a map here. Coffin Bay is at the bottom right of Eyre Peninsula. Although not far as the crow flies it is a long way around the land route. It will take us about eight hours in the chariot.

map

once again bear with me as I fumble with html

MMM. A light flossy read about love/lust/passion. Very appropriate for a sea side holiday.
Chucky I have some interesting pictures to show you when I get home.
You may wish to google "eyre peninsula fires south australia" to see what we have endured.
But we are safe and were never in danger. Sad loss of many lives tho.

This book has been released but I'll show you some photographs first over the next couple of days. Perhaps somehow work it into Antof9 challenge

Journal Entry 12 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Sunday, January 16, 2005
See the maps in the links above. This is the turn off to Coffin Bay from the main road from Port Lincoln. I rode my bike out here later in the week but pretend we are driving there now.
Hanging under the roadsign is some released books. These were found by a girl called Leah who also found some more of my releases in the town. All power to the release bags I reckon.
Here is one of the releases. Pity it is such a shite book! It was meant for a certain book box but there are quite enough books for that already.

second book

There is a good reason to take note of this corner for later photographic information purposes.

Ok, what is there to do in Coffin Bay?

Being a bookcrosser.....release books of course.

There is a rather lovely 12km (=7 miles) walk around the town. It's called the oyster walk and takes one around the foreshore, sometimes through bush like this. Kangaroos frequent the scrub and can be seen crossing the road at night. So there really are towns in Australia where there are kangaroos on the streets!

And in the garden! We came home one night to disturb one in the driveway.

Also the local golf course fills with roos in the evening and one can stand at the club house and see thirty or so within 100 yards.

Unfortunately my camera batteries were not up to it the evening we went there.

Anyway to get to the point here is a release on the Oyster Walk. These were NOT found by Leah.

Journal Entry 14 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Sunday, January 16, 2005
These ones WERE found by Leah. She too had a busy week!

A view a bit further round on the walk

Journal Entry 16 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Sunday, January 16, 2005
If you imagine you are now standing on the lawn in the pic in the entry above and looking back out over the beach.
The kiddy with hands in pockets in the foreground is "mini-me", my youngest. I think the two on the beach are mine too.
The jetty jumpers in the background are not related to me...BUT pretty soon they were joined by those who are.

Journal Entry 17 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Sunday, January 16, 2005
I really like this one and it is currently my screen saver

Journal Entry 18 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Sunday, January 16, 2005
Bit further round looking back to where the three photographs above were taken. There was a bit of work being done and a release spot presented itself. These have yet to be journalled although they did disappear a few hours after release.

Journal Entry 19 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Tuesday, January 18, 2005
It is too late and I have just made a few entries in skyring's convention journal.
So only one or two entries tonight.

Here is another release. The books went but have yet to be journalled.

Our friends had a boat. One day when they were doing a bit of mucking around in the bay in the background of this pic they were looked over by a playful pod of dolphins. On the same trip they a seal.

Journal Entry 20 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Tuesday, January 18, 2005
This was taken near the above release.

Journal Entry 21 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Tuesday, January 18, 2005
Ok, what else is there to do in Coffin Bay?

There is a national park with a rather rugged track open only to 4 wheel drive vehicles. We went on a little expedition.

This is mini-me trying to catch an emu! He honestly thought he might be able to pat one.

The car in the background is quizzical's Landcruiser. We were walking back, looking for her. She was bogged.

Journal Entry 22 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Tuesday, January 18, 2005
Make no mistake...these are dinky di wild emus. They, of course, ran away.

Journal Entry 23 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Tuesday, January 18, 2005
Never go into the Australian bush without lots of water. For people, and as it turned out, for car radiators.

Quizzical's car got a bit hot and we waited for the boiling to stop.

Journal Entry 24 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Friday, February 18, 2005
While there I also read Lamb, originally from MarciNYC. Great book and pepys if you are still reading this I think you would like it.
Bye the way chucky I reckon Marci has cut out her journal entry from this and others from the mbag. Hope she is OK. She sounds a bit stressed.

Anyway I really took this pic because directly above the book is a bit of smoke. There was a fire, not too far from where some of those beach photographs were taken. It looked to be under control.

Journal Entry 25 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Friday, February 18, 2005
But the next day was a real stinker, over 40 degrees C...that's 104 for you foreigners. And there was a very strong wind. We decided to go to a nearby town where there were more creature comforts.

BUT, remember the turnoff above where I left the book after the bike ride.
This is what greeted us there.

Journal Entry 26 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Friday, February 18, 2005
Most of what you can see is not cloud but smoke. The high temp and strong wind spread the fire right across the peninsula. Roads were closed, the electricity and phone lines went down.

Journal Entry 27 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Friday, February 18, 2005
We retreated back to Coffin Bay, bunkered down and listened to the radio to get fire updates and made plans about what to do if the wind changed and sent the fire in our direction...it was easy really go to the beach, and possibly into the sea

Journal Entry 28 by newk from Adelaide, South Australia Australia on Friday, February 18, 2005
What we didn't realise until later that that is what people in towns across the peninsula had to do. In some towns they had no choice but to run to the sea as houses burnt around them. The day left nine people, including four children, dead. As well there were countless live stock and wild animal deaths and many houses burned down.

So I am not sure that I should put the rest of the happy holiday snaps here.

I'll do the release notes and save the nice piccys for another time.
