from the back cover:
In the late 1950s, in a small New England town, Reverend Tyler Caskey has suffered a terrible loss and finds it hard to be the person he once was. He struggles to find the right words in his sermons and in his conversations with those facing crises of their own, and to bring his five-year-old daughter, Katherine, out of the silence she has observed in the wake of the family's tragedy. Tyler's usually patient and kind congregation now questions his leadership and propriety, and accusations are born out of anger and gossip. Then, in Tyler's darkest hour, a startling discovery will test his parish's humanity - and his own will to endure the trials that sooner or later test us all.
Enjoyed most of this except for one plot point that brought nothing to the story.

Received it today (Sept. 11th 2017) from Dove-i-libri. Thank you so much for sending it over! How exciting to get books in the mail!
Update after reading: I loved it. Pretty sad and almost soul-destroying, but so beautifully written! I'd only read Olive K by the same author and feel Abide With Me is along those lines. All characters are full of misery and sadness and I wonder if all of Elizabeth Strout's books will be similar. Why the hopelessness? A book worth keeping. Will obviously pass this one along but shall buy another one to keep. Thank you, Dove-i-libri and waterfalling for sharing it with me.

Sending it to dvg in NJ, who had it on their wishlist. Happy reading!
Such a wonderful surprise when this arrived in my mailbox. I apologize for the delay in JEing, I am usually good about doing it. I am so excited to add this to my TBR pile, I love how Strout tells a story. Thank you for sharing this with me and I will have it traveling soon.
Yes as Barcino said, it is a sad read but so beautifully written. I had to know what was going to happen next. Elizabeth Strout is one of my must-read authors. This story is about Tyler Caskey a preacher of a small town called West Annett, Maine. Caskey is mourning the loss of his wife and finding it difficult to speak at the pulpit. His daughter, Katherine, has started to act out in school. The story bounces nicely between past and present making for a riveting tale of human nature, community and religion. Details within the story are wonderful. Caskey becomes the center of small town gossip and what happens next makes the congregation show their better side. I am trying hard not to give out plot details of the story. It’s a good read and Strout fans will not be disappointed.

Oh, thank you, thank you! I've always wanted to read this, although I've heard so many mixed reviews. Hopefully, I'll get to read it soon! Thanks for thinking of me!
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this. I loved it so much, I selected it for my book club, who mostly loved it too. It is easy to have mixed emotions about this book in that it is a sad story with many characters not so easy to love.
Sending this along to another BCer with it on her Wishlist. Enjoy!

Well, unfortunately this book seems to be MIA. I finally followed up with the named recipient and apparently she never received it. I normally don’t throw out the tracking slip until it is received so it’s a mystery. Hoping fate will land this book in the proper hands and a journal will appear one of these days.
