I found this paperback at a local Savers thrift shop. I'd enjoyed other books in this series, including Shinju and The Concubine's Tattoo.

The series mixes historical details with supernatural elements, here featuring a special kind of scream that can kill - very unnerving indeed! But most of the emphasis is on the court politics, where our protagonist Sano and his woman-of-action wife Reiko try to solve crimes and retain their status while avoiding crossing powerful people. There's a surprising twist in this book, where Sano has to ally himself with one of his most long-standing enemies, but will the alliance last ?
