This book covers the influence of doctors over various aspects of Victorian society, "acting as the arbiter of fashion, the watchman of morals, and the judge of personal needs." I don't know that much about Victorian society, not having lived through it, and not having read that much about it, but I do recognise that a lot of what had held women back before "first-wave" feminism stemmed from misconceptions heralded by the medical community.
