I found this fair-condition paperback at the Book Cellar, and nabbed it for another release copy.

This is the first of Huff's "Blood" series featuring hot-tempered PI Vicki Nelson and low-key (until pressed) romance-book author - and vampire - Henry Fitzroy. Vicki's investigating a series of violent and bloody murders - murders which the press promptly dubs "Vampire Killings". Henry, who has a keen interest in keeping the whole idea of vampires low-key, starts investigating on his own, and soon finds that there's a diabolical power behind the slayings. He and Vicki form a tentative alliance - it's as hard for him to trust a mortal with his secret as it is for her to trust a vampire - and, with the aid of Vicki's ex-or-is-he police detective Celluci and scruffy street kid Tony, they try to save Toronto from a terrible foe.

The "Blood" books tend to be, not surprisingly, bloody in places, but they're also very funny - lots of banter between the main characters, whose relationships are interestingly complex. Each one has a new supernatural-type foe and an assortment of other perils, and if the resolutions sometimes seem a bit anticlimactic the books are still entertaining. I've enjoyed the whole series, but this one and Blood Lines are my favorites. And I was pleased with Huff's "Smoke" series, in which young Tony, only a secondary character here (though a favorite of mine) gets a bigger role.

[There's a TV Tropes page about the series, with some amusing and informative tidbits - but beware of spoilers; most are masked, but not all. This is a tie-in edition to the TV series.]

I left this book, bagged against the elements, hanging from a stone post near the memorial statue in the square; hope the finder enjoys it!
