This is a novel set in 1970s Zimbabwe (or Rhodesia as it was then - the timing is important.) The story focuses on a young girl called Tambu and her changing relationships with her family members as she goes to school and becomes educated. My favourite character was Lucia. I loved her fearlessness.

I really enjoyed this book - it was very accessible, engaging and interesting, with excellent characterization. Certainly one of the best debut novels I've read.
I can see why it is seen as a landmark book in African literature and also on the 1001 list.
Dangarembga has written a beautifully crafted coming of age story (which is apparently also semi auto-biographical). It tackles big issues of inequality due to poverty, education, race and gender, but with a light and loving touch that makes it a joy to read.
