And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic, 20th-Anniversary Edition

A masterpiece of investigative reporting, And the Band Played On is one of the few true modern classics. An international bestseller, a finalist of the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the basis for a critically acclaimed movie, Shilt's expose reveals why AIDS was allowed to spread unchecked during the early days of the epidemic while the most trusted institutions ignored or denied the threat. A book that has become the very foundation for the ongoing debate about the greatest medical epidemic of modern times, And the Band Played On is "a textbook on how institutions work - or fail to work - in the face of such a threat" (San Francisco Examiner).
I book this book online because, being born in 1988, I have never spoken/read a lot about HIV/AIDS. After watching a movie about Larry Kramer during the AIDS epidemic, I became interested in how the government/health organisations ignored this threat. This book is a fascinating read. It is truly terrifying how many people died before people began to sit up and pay attention.
