From the cover...

From the first day that the beguiling Sheba Hart joins the staff at St George's, history teacher Barbara Covett is convinced that she has found a kindred spirit. Barbara's loyalty to her new friend is passionate and unstiniting and when Sheba is discovered to be having an illicit affair with one of her young pupils, Barbara quickly elects herself as Sheba's chief defender. But all is not as it first seems in this dark story and, as Sheba will soon discover, a friend can be just as treacherous as any lover.

I could not put this down - a great book with a sinister undercurrent that kept me hooked. Neither of the main characters are particularly sympathetic, yet that somehow made the tale all the more enjoyable!

This book is now going out to my postal book group - I gave Decembermum a choice of books and she picked this one!

A very gripping book. I wasn't sure at first if I was going to like it as the narrator was so unsympathetic but by the end I couldn't put it down.

Sending on to Madmarchhare

Absolutely gripping, but at the same time excrutiating to read, as you feel you are intruding too much on private turmoil. The narrator is a very clever and sinister creation.

I am now sending this on in the postal book group.

oops - done it again, the anon finder, above, was, of course, me!

A great book - one you can't put down. The narrator was a sinister voyeur on the life of the "hero" and the subtle sense of prying make it an uncomfortable but fascinating read.

I found this book very cleverly plotted and well written, but everybody in it was so sad! I do hope that Sheba walked out and never came back.
Passing on to the next in the book group.

I found this gripping but uncomfortable reading - very clever! Sending on to next person in the bookgroup.

So glad that this book found its way to me! I saw the cover in a photo of a huge pile of books taken at a Bookcrossing meet up - but couldn't make out the title, but wanted to read it anyway!

What an uncomfortable yet compelling book. It had me writhing in my seat at points with the all too familiar emotions - and paranoid about being an overbearing and controlling 'friend' to the extent that I didn't talk to a couple of people for a few days only to have them call me up and ask if I was OK!

I could say so much about this book - but some of what I want to say would ruin the book for those who haven't read it yet, so will keep quiet for once!

I read this 5 months ago, thorougly enjoyed it but have decided not to read it again as I have a small mountain of books awaiting me.

gripping & compelling with dark & uncomfortable undertones -a clever book -and much better than I expected given Zoe Heller's Sunday Times columns of yesteryear!

Ok.. confusing bit!
I didn't read this copy as it had gone missing on the PBG -but was replaced with this one! which will be returning to Camis
