This book was found in Bücherhäuschen in der Bushaltestelle in Kasendorf, Bayern, Germany on 2017-05-26. Years ago, I enjoyed Tom Wolfe's earlier works "The Bonfire of Vanities" and "The Right Stuff". Now I'm looking forward to renewing the acquaintance with this famous author's work.

This book has almost 800 pages, yet I just needed a handful of quiet afternoons/evenings to enjoy it. As usual, Wolfe lets the reader look inside his characters' heads, we can scan their thoughts and observe them while they are planning their little (or grand) schemes. Fate, however, intervenes and lets their "best-layed plans go oft' awry" - leading to another interesting plot twist.

For a long time, I was very curious how the poor guy from California would get to meet the rich guy in Atlanta, GA and influence his life. In the end, this turned out to be surprisingly simple - a clever little piece of ingenious writing.

Thrown in for free is a beginner's course on the philosophy of Epictetus and other Stoics; having already read some excerpts from the works of Seneca, this came as a welcome refresher.
