The Catastrophe

On impulse, a food critic gets caught up in a terrorist shooting, causing problems for himself and the terrorists as they decide how to deal with him. Surprisingly, given such a premise, very little actually happens in the novel - it's mostly all flashbacks and contemplations by the characters as to what brought them to this point in their lives.
I can't say I loved this book, but I did enjoy it more than I expected - there was something fascinating about just how flawed each of the three main characters was, and how much of a mess they'd made of their lives. Normally that sort of thing puts me off a book (there's nothing more annoying than a character who continually makes bad decisions, and doesn't learn from their mistakes), but it kind of worked in this one.
