James Ellroy investigates his mother's murder.
Part memoir, part true crime story, this is a fascinating book as Ellroy investigates his mother's murder decades earlier.
Posted to the winner of the True Crime sweeps.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
Thank you. This looks like it will be great!
I just started reading this tonight and found the labels in the book, that I missed when I first journalled it! Thank you :)
I also noticed that the label in the book, is the one in memory of Bucklesbook; a lovely lady that I met many times at Toronto bookcrossing meetings. It was lovely to see her label in a book from so far away.

This was interesting. Ellroy's writing style is very abrupt and staccato. It lends a sense of urgency to his story and made me want to push on. At times, it is excruciatingly detailed and circular, but it does fit the narrative.
The book is basically in three parts. The first third is all about James Ellroy's childhood and youth, including his mother's murder. The middle is about police detectives, particulary Bill Stoner and his career as a homicide detective.
In the third part, the last part, their paths cross and they work together to find Geneva Ellroy's murderer. This takes them into the past and down rabbit holes and dead ends. James is almost obsessed and that comes through in his writing. Bill Stoner is more measured and distanced.
The author mentions several fiction works he has written but I have never heard of any of them. I may seek them out just to see if this book is typical of his style.
Thanks for sharing this rahar109.
