Wish there was a half star, as I'd give this a 3 and half. I enjoyed this book about a mother grieving her son, who died in an avalanche. She is alternately sad, bored, bitchy, judgemental, thoughtful, unkind and tender-hearted. In other words a human being. Hemmings writes great characters, I loved the protagonist's father and despised her girlfriend Suzanne. At first I was a little bothered by the father's digs at Suzanne regarding her weight, but the more I found out about the bullying, racist, classist, all round asshole Suzanne, the more I liked his jabs at her. Still unsure why Sarah liked her. Add to this odd mix, Cully's friends, possible girlfriend and the odd people that tend to live in a resort town (shades of Whistler!) and you get the Possibilities.
Just a note: I really, really hated Suzanne.
