A crime story that does not feature the famous Hercule Poirot nor Miss Marple. A good Christie novel nonetheless.

Thank you for this tag, mcsar. Looks like a thrilling read with a good female protagonist. TBR.

Wow, what a ride. Technically a thriller rather than a whodunnit, but very entertaining and sometimes ridiculously funny. Yes, we still get all of the colonialist and sexist perspectives that are beyond questionable, but we also get much gossip and speculation and some scenes that are quite bizarre.
At first I was a bit annoyed by the skips in narrative perspective, then I got used to them (and the entertainment they provide, not to speak of the not-at-all well-hidden clues that are easier to spot with the help of this technique), and in the end I really enjoyed the reveals (especially about the secretary).
The ending is even more bizarre in my view, but then I have a suspicion that Mrs Christie might be taking the piss of the thriller genre. :)

Thank you anathema-device for the book (yes, a good choice - I'm always happy to read an Agatha Christie novel), the great looking tea and chocolate and the cute postcard. I love all of it, thank you :)

Quite different to the "normal" Agatha Christie novels, but still a good read, especially considering it was written in 1924.

The newly-orphaned Anne Beddingfield came to London expecting excitement. She didn't expect to find it on the platform of Hyde Park Corner tube station. When a fellow passenger pitches onto the rails and is electrocuted, the 'doctor' on the scene seems intent on searching the victim rather than examining him...
Armed with a single clue, Anne finds herself struggling to unmask a faceless killer known only as 'The Colonel' - while 'The Colonel' struggles to eliminate her...

This book arrived in Delphi today as a surprise, along with a book I chose from the First Sentence VBB, some chocolate (didn't last long!), a couple of book labels and stickers and a nice postcard from keeta1...
A great parcel, traveling from New Zealand to Greece in phenomenal time!
BookCrossers are very generous people!

Thank you very much keeta1, it has been a while since I read Agatha Christie, always a pleasure to read her books! And I think this one is new to me too. What a treat, you made my day!

While I thought I haven't read this book previously, I recalled a couple of developments and scenes, so I've read it once upon a time I guess. I didn't remember anything too crucial to spoil it for me though.

I enjoyed reading it, although I think the main character, Anne Beddingfeld, and a few of the plot twists are not always convincing. Still most of the people featuring in the novel have a distinct voice and are often written with wit and nerve.
Agatha Christie added a bit of background story and a bit of romance for her heroine which is not that common on most of her other crime novels.

It's not that easy to guess who's the "Colonel" and after the revelation is made, I think I share Anne's feelings towards him...

An interesting and easy book to read!

Thanks for this surprise company of my First-Sentence-vbb book of choice! I think, I didn't read this one before - but you never can be sure, with the annoying practice to change titles frequently in the German editions. We'll see.... ;-)
