I got this slightly-battered ex-library paperback from the charity-sale shelves at a local Hannaford's. It's the first of a trilogy, and while this story stands alone I do want to read the rest now!
The story centers on Daniel, age 15, who's been taken out of school by his parents for a trip to York, England - something he's enjoying very much, as he loves history and wants to write about the things he's seeing. But his parents have been behaving oddly and he's getting worried; is someone ill? Are they planning to divorce? What's going on?
Meanwhile, he makes friends with a local cab driver, whom he feels as if he's known before - and, through him, with a band of gypsies (the traditional Rom, a dwindling breed). Amid all these interesting things, he finds himself feeling growing dread of one particular ancient tower. And then there are the ghosts of Roman soldiers...
I like the writing here, and the mix of supernatural elements with the all-too-real issues facing Dan and his parents. Very nice touches, from scene-setting to history to clashing-culture plot points. I'd wanted to visit York already, but this book made me want it even more!
