The year is 1946 and all over the world young women are crossing the seas in their thousands en route to the men they married in wartime and an unknown future. In Sydney, Australia four women join 650 other brides and hundreds of naval officers on an extraordinary voyage to England - aboard the Victoria. Rules of honour, duty and separation are strictly enforced, from the aircraft carrier's captain down to the lowliest young stoker. But the men and the brides will find their lives intertwined in ways the Navy could never have imagined. And Frances Mackenzie - an enigmatic young bride whose past comes back to haunt her thousands of miles from home - will find that sometimes the journey is more important than the destinations.

An interesting piece of history of which I was not aware. The book manages to pull together the stories, history, and imagination in a believable mix. For some of the brides the journey ends happily & for others it doesn't but you feel very involved in their lives. I wasn’t terribly excited with the first half of the book, I didn’t think it gripped me like her other books had but it kept you want to know more. As I said, you get involved in their lives and you want to learn their about their past, especially Frances. And it all changed in the second half. I could stop, I needed to know all about them and what happened to them after they arrived in England. One thing I didn't understand was why Avice travelled 6 weeks on the ship in cramped conditions hating every minutes of it, only to have her rich family fly out to meet her when she arrived. Why didn't she fly in comfort too?

I'm struggling to get into this. I think it's just that it isn't the right book for me at the moment. But never fear, I have a secret plan for it. ;-)
