"On an autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives at a grand house in Amsterdam to begin her new life as the wife of wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt. Though curiously distant, he presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. It is to be furnished by an elusive miniaturist, whose tiny creations ring eerily true.

As Nella uncovers the secrets of her new household she realizes the escalating dangers they face. The miniaturist seems to hold their fate in her hands – but does she plan to save or destroy them?"

This book successfully places you into a different time and location, you are transported into 17th century Amsterdam society and get swept away with the mystery and intrigue of Petronella's challenging marriage and new family with their secrets and lies.

The actual role of the miniaturist in the story confused me, as she seemed to be something of a byline and I was disappointed she didn't play a more prominent role in the story. I think my overall impression of the story was that it was very bleak and when I reached the last page I felt quite melancholy. It seemed that every page was filled with depressing misery with not one chapter to lift me out of the grim narrative. I’m not sure how Petronella's relationship with her husband was sufficient for their bond to develop when they hadn't been together throughout the story. If it had had some lighter, even romantic moments, I would have definitely enjoyed it more. But that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it.

I enjoyed it but it felt a bit rushed an unfinished towards the end. There were a lot of loose ends that I would have liked resolved, another chapter before the end of the book would have been good to iron out the creases!

Given to my mum.
