Hanna, Dan, Constance and Emmet return to the west coast of Ireland for a final family Christmas in the home their mother is about to sell. As the feast turn to near painful comedy, a last, desperate act from Rosaleen - a woman who doesn't quite know how to love her children - forces them to confront the weight of family ties and the road that brought them home.

This was read by our book group. Most people scored it about half way but there was a couple of top marks in there too. For me, it was too close to home to enjoy. A mother, living in a house falling down round about her, four children, three grandchildren. You just need to swap around a few of the characteristics. It's my sister that it gay, it is me that drinks too much to get through family gatherings not the youngest, my brother is the apple of mum's eye even although he's selfish and doesn't care about the family, and they've all moved out of the country while I (was made to) stay at home and look after the house and is now lied about to her siblings by her mother. I could go on but give them a few more years and they won't be talking to each other at all now the family home has gone.

Enright is such an amazing writer and observer of the family situation. I really 'enjoyed' this book, she captures the family dynamics with acute accuracy and makes it into a riveting story along the way.

Thank you earthcaroleanne for this surprise read.

Certainly a book worth of a book club. I can imagine an endless heated debate.
Very well written. As a mother I find it very disturbing. Who is the woman that isn't truly questioned by the final sentence "I should have paid more attention to things"?

A reminder of my travelling along the so beautiful green road when the Tiger was in full waking up.

I liked this book, but to be honest I had higher expectations. People who happen to follow my BookCrossing activity might have notice by now that I have a soft spot for Irish authors or books that are related to Ireland one way or another, so it's no surprise I enjoyed the "Irishness" of "The Green Road" too. I liked Anne Enright's poetic prose and elliptical narration technique too, elements that seem to be popular among a young-ish generation of Irish writers. I found the various chapters of the book quite well-written and I liked the diversity of characters. But...

While each chapters was interesting, each character's story was so fragmental, that when these characters finally got together, it wasn't easy to decipher why they were the way they were or why they were behaving the way they were behaving. The book felt disjointed, while some developments towards the end were very predictable. The last chapter of the book was abrupt and not really an end to the story- at least not one that felt like a conclusion or made much sense to me...

I somehow think that this book seemed mostly as a collection of stories loosely connected, than a complete novel. That said, I'll definitely try something else from this author at some point... 6 ½/10
