It is 1864 and as her train pulls out of Waterloo Station, Lizzie Martin considers her future. It is not without regret that she is leaving her friend Inspector Ben Ross from Scotland Yard, to whom she has formed an attachment. But for now her services are needed in Hampshire, where she is to be a companion to young Lucy Craven, who is recovering from the death of her baby...
This book goes to OldVulture.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Thanks a lot for sending me this book!
I'm very sorry for my late entry, I moved last week and did not manage to see adequately to the books.
I liked this story, that took Lizzy out of London. Thrilling too and what stroke me - the author really seems to have a soft spot for animals :-)

Accompanies me to the Convention as a substitute for the wishlist book, I ordered but that did not arrive in time (what a shame...)
My NSS book.
I have a good feeling about this so don't worry if it isn't a wishlist book, oldVulture. And I am more than happy with the lovely book earrings (which have been much admired) and all the other goodies, you spoiled me! I also love the spotty and sparkly bag which I have preserved carefully. And the beautiful Hundertwasser card will go on my kitchen cupboard gallery ;-)

A rattling good mystery with lots of atmosphere, in the streets of London, Whitechapel, and in the countryside with its attendant characters - the sexton fond of the local pub, the snooty people in the manor house, the ratcatcher and his wife, the servants, the alienist... Ann Granger has a nice turn of phrase that sometimes made me smile.
The story is narrated by Lizzy, brought in as companion to the distraught Lucy, in tandem with her policeman friend Ben. Lizzy is very observant and makes an excellent amateur detective; she's very good at describing the characters and landscape.
I shall look out for others by this writer.
