At first, this novel reads like a collection of short, character-driven short stories united only by the fact that their lead characters are well-known men from history who have connections both to North America and to Ireland. When McCann begins to focus on the remarkable women who influence these men, though, the real craft and architecture of the novel becomes clear. Beautifully written and totally absorbing.
