I got this fair-condition hardcover at the local library's annual book sale. It's about a centuries-old vampire who awakens... in Memphis, Tennessee, in the midst of a period of racial tension. Could be grim, yet there are campy aspects: he finds a local group of teen-vampires who've learned vampire lore from movies like Blacula!
The opening's a standard one: pathologist investigating well-preserved mummy in full dress with odd jeweled item transfixing its heart pulls out the item - and is surprised when the corpse revives. (Though her surprise doesn't last long; newly-revived vamps tend to be really, really hungry.)
There's a lot of local color, nods to the history of the region, and many, many horrifying and violent incidents past and present - and, eventually, a battle between our vampire-protagonist and a very clever foe. (Whether her eventual fate was deserved or not might depend on the reader, but it's definitely chilling.)
