The first book in the Xeelee series was a good start. The story revolves around a group of humanity barely existing around a nebula that is slowly dying. The characters are well developed and the story progress quiet well.
I'm adding this to the scifi bookbox.

I'm claiming this slightly-battered paperback from the SF bookbox.
The book opened with a bang - literally, as a foundry explosion leaves protagonist Rees musing on the grim (and often too short) lives his people have been leading. The surroundings are a kind of dying-tech, as the old structures fall apart; turns out they're from a ship that wound up in a very alien universe with wildly different laws of physics, and the survivors are barely managing to hold on. But that state of affairs can't last, and Rees gets involved in a very dangerous venture that might save what's left of humankind.
Lots of good universe-building here, and some compelling characters - and some very grisly scenes indeed!
[There's a TV Tropes page on the Xeelee series.]
