This first-in-series started out a bit slowly for me but quickly picked up and I ended up enjoying it very much. I love books like this about real people with fictional events. As much as I love her books, I knew very little of Beatrix Potter before reading this, so it was an interesting way to learn about her life.
Beatrix holds her own with those villagers who don’t approve of her buying the farm (a single woman, after all – horrors!). I love her animals, and they converse among themselves (think Rita Mae Brown’s Mrs. Murphy mysteries) which took a few pages to get used to but then I found enjoyable and clever.
As in many mysteries set in small villages, I find the interactions between the people as interesting as the whodunit part, and this was no exception. I’m looking forward to reading the next one.

An enjoyable read. I am glad that I got to read the 1st in the series before any of the others. I felt that the author stayed true to Beatrix Potter.
This is a warm, sensitive story of Beatrix Potter arriving in Sawrey village in the Lake District and her efforts to finalize the purchase of Hill Top Farm. There are many decisions which need to be made about the farm, especially since there is a farmer and his family in residence there. There are a few mysteries in this story. It was nice to read a mystery that was not a murder mystery, It is more a small community of people who are so closely connected to each other that they cannot help but all get involved in each other's business.
I found this book very relaxing and soothing once I stopped expecting to be reading a conventional murder mystery. There are animals in the story which talk. In actuality, the animals play a large part in helping relate information to the reader about the situations.
If you are someone who enjoys the stories of Beatrix Potter, having no problems allowing mice, rabbits, hedgehogs, and cats and dogs to be vital characters in the book, you will enjoy this tale. Read the book for the lovely descriptions of the location, insights into life in a tiny community, and the facts regarding the life of Beatrix Potter.
I am reserving this for my granddaughter BabyPooh
