Picked up at Sundays BookCrossing meeting though sadly not registered by anyone there. So I get the privilege of adding to my registration numbers by registering it with BookCrossing so I can release it on International BookCrossing Day2017, Friday 21 April.

Cover: For 15-year-old Michael Berg, a chance meeting with an older woman leads to far more than he ever imagined. The woman in question is Hanna, and before long they embark on a passionate, clandestine love affair which leaves Michael both euphoric and confused. For Hanna is not all she seems.

Years later, as a law student observing a trial in Germany, Michael is shocked to realize that the person in the dock is Hanna. The woman he had loved is a criminal. Much about her behaviour during the trial does not make sense. But then suddenly, and terribly, it does - Hanna is not only obliged to answer for a horrible crime, she is also desperately concealing an even deeper secret…

‘Leaps national boundaries and speaks straight to the heart… a moving, suggestive and ultimately hopeful work’ NEW YOURK TIMES
‘A sensitive, daring, deeply moving book about the tragic results of fear and the redemptive power of understanding’ RUTH RENDELL

In 2014 I was reading another copy of this finding it enjoyable, in fact truly arresting writing when I put it to one side to complete another BookCrossing reading project. Time to re-locate it add these reading notes and release it.

On completion I’d say this was an exhausting but fascinating read and I’m having difficulty putting impressions into words. Though it’s easy to say this was not chirpy, mmm even that I feel I need to qualify as some of the reflections into life and living were beautifully expressed and moving. I initially peeked at The Reader only intending to get an idea of how it went before my eyes were scooting over the pages like reading was a race. Schlink’s delved into such ponderous topic areas here yet deftly distilled the thoughts; confronting historical horrors, a nation’s guilt, individual motivations then moved onto facets of understanding and even testing the waters of forgiveness, a novel that haunts and stays with one I’d say.

Of all the praise quotes I identify with the RUTH RENDELL one most “A sensitive, daring, deeply moving book about the tragic results of fear and the redemptive power of understanding”.

Next this will be going travelling, and doing that BookCrossing thing of “making the whole world a library!”
