This is here as a ring, and although it was very thought-provoking, I'm not sure how much I enjoyed it. Sheldon is the main character, and he is the only one who has any depth - and his depths are full of different levels, like walking on a crust of snow which gives way to a surface below, and then gives way to another. An elderly man, whose now late wife claimed suffers from dementia, is uprooted and taken to live in Norway by his grand-daughter and her Norwegian husband. An ex-marine, Sheldon struggles with this almost surreal reality, and finds himself carrying out one last rescue mission, while trying to sift between memories of his own, those he has imagined of his son, killed in Viet Nam, and a multitude of other options. It is certainly engrossing, but the ending, while probably realistic, was quite unsatisfying. This heads to Greece next.
This ring went missing for a while during a recent move. Fortunately, it did surface again fairly quickly, so I could read it and bring it along with me here to France. Now it leaves, along with another ring, and heads to Greece. Thanks so much for making this available. All the best - and enjoy the book!
The book arrived two days ago along with an other bookring on a very hectic time work-wise, but I'll do my best to read it soon and pass it on.
Thank you everyone. Happy Bookiversary Bookworm-lady!

Finally a book of this genre that offers some depth and it's not completely Americanized with a superhero who takes his guns, shoots everything and god bless America!
The main hero seems to be a person too full of his self at first sight and in real life he would be a tiring person to live with, but one can't help to sympathise with him while reading the book. As the story goes on, it touches on many different themes and more levels are revealed. Memories, experiences and illusions of the main character blend among the action and we get to know him and his family more indepth as the novel proceeds. Sheldon Horowitz appears much more human and real than others on similar books, the story is quite well-written and the setting quite refreshing.
That said, some of Sheldon's ramblings are longer than necessary and especially towards the middle the book loses its pace somehow -but it peaks up again latter. The author, naturally been American, doesn't avoid a very American-centered logic at parts of the book. US is the land of freedom and the rest of the world doesn't get it, so let's go save them and show them the way... The details about armoury might relate more to an American audience, but I found them utterly long and mundane. It's never a gun or rifle or a weapon, it's the X model of Y brand, coming with a Z barrel produced on this or that year and takes the X armoury which is similar to the Y armoury that NATO uses and it's a fine choice, although a Z armoury would be better for the job. Ho-hum...
At parts the author seemed to offer a more "European" view on things, for example wars and violence which is a complicated matter with different layers and points of view, but on the other hand, he often presents the "bad guys" in a superficial, silly, cartoon-ish way. The plot doesn't avoid some hyperbole, while the very end left some things without explanation. I don't want to write spoilers here, so I'll leave it at that.
It's not a literature masterpiece or something, but definately a decent read to pass the time and way better than others on this genre.
Thanks once again for this bookray, the book will soon travel to Icila.

I deeply appreciated this book, not as a triller as such but for the humour, Roth's style.
