Phryne is back in a thrilling mystery that takes her into dark convents and dank cellars in a frantic search for missing girls.

The decidedly raven-haired Miss Phryne Fisher returns to delve deep into the dark cellars of Melbourne.

1929: pretty little golden-haired girls are going missing in Melbourne. But they're not just pretty. Three of them are pregnant, poor girls from the harsh confines of the Magdalen Laundry. People are getting nervous.

Polly Kettle, a pushy, self-important Girl Reporter with ambition and no sense of self preservation, decides to investigate--and promptly goes missing herself.

It's time for Phryne and Dot to put a stop to this and find Polly Kettle before something quite irreparable happens to all of them. It's a tale of convents and plots, piracy, murder and mystery . . . and Phryne finally finds out if it's true that blondes have more fun.

'Elegant, fabulously wealthy and sharp as a tack, Phryne sleuths her way through these classical detective stories with customary panache.' The Age

I enjoyed this book. Much better than the previous Phrye Fisher mystery that I read, but this one is later in the series, and so perhaps the writer had improved with experience. Some of the best parts was the social commentary involving happenings and attitudes of the times. I did guess where Polly was likely to be.

Another Phryne Fisher mystery.
Phryne heard about three young girls missing from a convent laundry. They were all pregnant and quite pretty. She had quite a lot of adventures trying to find them, and almost captured herself. It's a tale of convents and plots, piracy, murder and mystery. Well worth reading.

Picked up from the Little Library in Gerringong last week - thanks for sharing!

I'm a lapsed Bookcrosser from way back (Miss-Owl if anyone still remembers me!) but the intervening years have seen me forget my B/C password as well as the email password associated with my account. But it was still a thrill to see the familiar sticker peeping out at me from the Little Library - particularly attached to a narrative about the incomparable Ms Fisher, about whom I had heard so much but read so little.

With her effortless efficiency, style and savvy, her character is certainly memorable and I enjoyed the historical journey down Melbourne's darker laneways (the Paris end of Collins St!). But - and I appreciate this may come across as heresy - for this very reason I sometimes found Phryne somewhat of a deus ex machina or a Bilbo Baggins... you just know she is going to survive, so there's little real suspense. Having said that, it was a pleasant autumnal holiday read and I did devour the last few chapters in particular.

Planning a release in another street library, in Sydney this time. I'll journal again when it's out. Hope it gets to travel again!
