I found this good-condition softcover on the charity-sale bookshelves in Hannaford Supermarket. It's by the author of Who Cut the Cheese?, a history of farts {wry grin}; this one has a different focus, and is about the downtown Los Angeles area that became notorious in film as the perfect setting for noir thrillers.

It's a very narrow focus for a book, and yet the sheer number of films set mostly or in part in this one small area is impressive, and the photos reveal lots of tidbits about film making in that era.
