The Midwich Cuckoos
3 journalers for this copy...
This was an entertaining read but does now feel a little dated despite it being from the sci-fi genre. Attitudes surrounding the opinions of women or how valid a woman's observations were regarded, gave this book a time stamp! This, unlike the innocent style of Chocky followed a variety of discussions bordering upon intellectual ones...perhaps giving it a bit of an air of a fuddy-duddy nature! I vaguely remember watching a film based on this book but wasn't very impressed and now I've read the book I can understand why. I'm sure you can tell, but I was disappointed with this read - especially so that it has appeared on the 1001 list of books to read before you die.
Since this review I have discussed it further and maybe this book is trying to draw your attention to the lack of voice women had when it was written. It's still not quite my cup of tea but maybe it didn't provoke enough thought with me at the time of reading. I will be very interested to hear further views!

The sleepy village of Midwich experiences a mysterious 'Dayout', when all its inhabitants lose consciousness. When later all the women of childbearing age find they are expecting, Midwich has to come to terms with its clutch of 'cuckoos'. Obviously this is set before the era of birth control/abortion but because the story isn't based around technology this didn't feel very dated to me - the characters are of their time but plot could be transposed into the present without much difficulty. Wyndham is totally original and definitely one of the greats.
