This is from 1982 - and that makes it actually more interesting to read now. Things have accelerated, if anything. It looks at the idea of childhood from antiquity to now. I read his book TEACHING AS A SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITY back in college in the 70's when I was studying to teach and loved it. Heard him speak in at NYU once too.
