CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Hope you enjoy the Oslo Convention.
Thank you so much for this book!
From the back of the book: "Monique Dembele saves lives and dispenses hope in a place where childbirth is a life-or-death matter. Her unquenchable passion to improve the lot of the women and children in her West African village is matched by her bouyant humour in the face of an unhappy marriage and backbreaking work.
This is the deeply affecting story of the rare friendship between a young aid volunteer and an inspirational midwife who defies tradition and becomes - too early in her life - a legend."
I've just finished this book. It was so interesting to read this story about life in a country I knew very little about. Kris, the author, lived in Mali as a volunteer from 1989 to 1991. And I hope that there's been many Moniques in Mali and other countries after that, helping other women and children.
I'm not sure how to describe this book, but I'm very glad that I did read it.

The book is with me.
I have been to Mali once, alas only for a couple of hours at the airport in Bamako, when my plane could not land in Guinea-Bissau due to a thunder storm. We got taken to Bamako, 2000 km away from our destination, got told to get off the plane, and that the next plane would appear in 6 days time! Welcome to Africa!
Luckily the weekly flight between Paris - Dakar - GuineaBissau - Dakar, was delayed by 24 hours (because it had gone of the run-way in Paris). Thus I can only claim a night at the airport as my Mali experience. Got to Guinea-Bissau where I spent three years volunteering.
