Looking forward to reading P D James again! 👍
I picked up this book at Espresso House and quickly concluded it wasn't my thing. So, I passed it on to Elizabeth (a Jane Austen buff!) and she asked me to pass on this following comment:
"Though I am an admirer of P.D.James for her detective novels, I think she was rash to attempt a sequel to "Pride & Prejudice" by Jane Austen. P.D.James nowhere achieves the wit and sparkle of the original novel. Elizabeth & Darcy neither of them say a memorable word either to each other or to the other characters. The character of Wickham is perhaps the most convincing follow-up of his Jane Austen role. But that leads me to my main criticism - the complicated and interwoven plot with all the goings-on in the wood is finally given a most unconvincing solution. Can one really believe John Bidwell, hither to described as at death's door, could have killed a soldier (whom he assumes on sight, with no evidence, to be the seducer of his sister)?
Finally there is far too much re-hashing of the Georgiana Darcy story from P&P. P.D.James should have stuck to what she was so good at, following the example of Jane Austen herself, who knew she herself was not the right person to write the history of the Saxe Coburg Gotha family (the wonderful suggestion of the Prince Regent's Librarian!). "
