Purchased USED for $1.00 at the annual Friends of the Library book sale in Lawton, Oklahoma.
The local library book club was reading this so I snatched it off my bookshelf and devoured it in four nights. Luckily, it was effortless to read because Vance writes like I do. As for the subject matter, this also appeals to me: an unflinching, introspective memoir with corroborating stats and studies thrown in to provide a truly educational experience for those of us who have not lived a similar life. The topics and conclusions drawn, as well as the open-ended questions posed by the author - made for a spirited discussion that could easily have lasted two hours.
Reserved for round 9 of our Non-fiction VBB.
Claimed from our non-fiction VBB and headed to NM. Enjoy!
Arrived several days ago - sorry for the delay!
I agree that this was a breeze to read & very interesting; I zoomed through it without intending to. I think what is sticking with me the most is that the behaviors and attitudes that Vance describes are not limited to Appalachia nor the families from that region, it is much more pervasive, and world-wide. How to get beyond it.....
