"Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!"
8 journalers for this copy...
This is a very readable book about creative thinking. Feynman won the Nobel Prize in physics, and was apparently a world-class goofball. Traded ideas with Einstein, Nick the Greek, and other important thinkers. And suggests way to improve *your* eccentricity, or at least to revel in it.

Funny that this one starts out almost home again! I can't wait to dig in! I'll journal when done...
I started reading this one on a train to Toronto and caught myself laughing out loud. Having grown up in a University town myself, I was well prepared for the eccentric stories of Feynman the brainiac, but he still surprised me with his many practical jokes, his amorous conquests and his appreciation for drumming in Brazil! This behind-the-scenes of scientists type of book is one of my favorite genres to read and I will surely be recommending this one to other friends! My favorite part of the book is the section on choosing textbooks. What a conundrum! Now this book is off to arugh48187.
Received in my mailbox today. I have a few bookrings in front of it, but I am a fast reader so I should get to it soon.
I thought this one would be some boring physics tome, but it turned out to be a charming account of the antics of one quirky Nobel Prize winner. There were some instances when what he was writing about were way over my head, but they were overwhelmed by Feynman's escapades. I thoroughly enjoyed this one...and my favorite part was when he dissed the PRIZE and called it a pain in the neck. Hee!
Off to MaryZee as soon as I get a chance to swing by the post office. Thanks for sharing.

Enjoyed this very much. The subtitle - Adventures of a Curious Character - was very appropriate. I didn't enjoy the hard science part of this book as much as I enjoyed the rest of it; fortunately, hard science was maybe only 10% of the book! This book was much more about how Fenyman was continually curious about the world around him. And he was definitely a character! I enjoyed his experience with deciding to study Spanish vs. Portugese - and then needing the Portugese and having to adapt. Also, his experiences learning sketching and having his artwork sold.
If someone is looking for an interesting, and unusual non-fiction read, this is definitely a good book. It is a quick read too. This book shows a good example of why we should always challenge ourselves to learn new things.
Sending this to FutureCat - Monday, November 29th.

Arrived safely in New Zealand today. I've got a couple of books I need to read before this one, so I probably won't get to it before Christmas, and MrPloppy has asked if he can read it, so I hope nobody minds if he buts in to the ring here and reads it before me?

Arrggghhhh!!!! Sorry, sorry, sorry! I just discovered this sitting in our bookshelf - MrPloppy had put it to one side while he finished another book, and we'd both completely forgotten about it!!! Most abject apologies from us both!
Anyway, I promise I'll get it read and sent on straight away!

Fascinating stuff. There were quite a few places in the book where I got the feeling that if I'd ever had the chance of meeting Feynman in person, I'd have wanted to punch him (the review on the back of the books describes him as having had "raging chutzpah", which is about right), but he made up for the irritation-causing component of his personality with an incredible curiousity about everything around him - whether the inner workings of the atom, the best way to pick locks, how to behave in a Japanese hotel, or how well a human's sense of smell can compete with a bloodhound. I've always said a truly intelligent person can never be bored, and I suspect Feynman was never bored by anything in his life - he always found something new to investigate. That's a lesson a lot of us could do to learn.

Feynman arrived in England today. Thanks!
I read this a while ago and was well entertained throughout, although I did think Feynman sounded a bit slimy at times! He was certainly a character! The book is now on its way to Catwoman who accepted it when I offered it in PokPok's wonderful non-fiction virtual bookbox.
Thanks illinicheme and Lizanne!
