I found this handsome hardcover at a local thrift shop, and thought it looked intriguing. (It's an anthology that includes the story "Eisenheim the Illusionist," which was adapted for the screen in the 2006 film The Illusionist.
The stories here are rather dream-like, surreal tales, sometimes with amusing notes but often just... very strange! I liked the concept of "A Game of Clue," in which the familiar game-board, pieces, and suspects are described as coming to a semblance of life as the game goes on, only to flatten out again - but the payoff just wasn't there for me. "The Sepia Postcard" has a path-not-taken vibe but, again, didn't involve me as much as I'd have liked. "The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad" blends excerpts from the fabled adventures with a history of Tales of the Arabian Nights, and contrasts Sinbad's voyages with those of readers.
And there's more - but for me the concepts interested me more than the execution.
[There's a TV Tropes page on the film "The Illusionist", with some references to the story and the differences between it and the film.]
