Swapped at www.readitswapit.co.uk for 'Northanger Abbey' by Jane Austen.
Felt like a nice, light read and what better to turn to than a bit of YA dystopian sci-fi!
I really enjoyed this - Westerfield has created a future that is both believable and a little scary - you only have to look around you at all the teenagers trying to create exactly the same style as everyone else to see how easily his world could come about. And such a short step from changing what you look like to changing how you think!
Tally, as our heroine, is written nicely, although she isn't quite the spunky, go-getter that usually haunts this type of book - she's definitely a reluctant hero and I'm not 100% convinced by her sudden change of opinion about becoming pretty - she doesn't seem to take that much prodding before she turns her back on her home. However, the story wouldn't work if she didn't so we can forgive the author that.
I loved the idea of a virus that attacks oil, turning it into a flammable gas that explodes on contact with oxygen - I'd love to read an adult apocalyptic type story set in the world where that happens!
So, a good read - looking forward to tracking down the other books in the series.

Received as part of a box of Christmas goodies - thank you very much! I've been meaning to read this series for ages, ever since I used to shelve them when working in a library so I'm really happy to receive this and see if I enjoy it as much as I hope I will!
I finally got around to reading this book, and I'm glad I did. I thought a lot of the premise was really well-thought out, I'm not 100% sold on the concept of making everyone pretty, but I liked the idea of the struggle between those who control the system and those who reject it, and the way it describes the remnants of our world and how quickly everything can fall apart.
Already have the rest of the series on order at the library to find out what happens next!
