This book provides several scenarios for the reader. Firstly, it explores small town life in modern day Vermont - but it could be any town where there are families that have lived there for generations, and who are maintained only if every citizen sticks to a certain kind of conformity.
Secondly, the book engages in the current controversies about midwifery - embraced by some, treated with suspicion by others.
Thirdly, it paints a portrait of a woman, seen through the eyes of her young daughter, who guides others to a simpler, less technological, more natural way of having babies. For some, nothing about that path is simple
