The story of the American bookshop in Paris opened in 1919 by Sylvia Beach. Her friends and frequenters of the shop were James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein, D.H.Lawrence, Ezra Pound and so on, and Sylvia Beach published the first edition of Ulysses. The bookshop in rue de l'Odéon is no longer there, but on the quai near Notre-Dame is another fascinating bookshop with the same name, a compulsory visit whenever I go to Paris.
