My review of another copy of this book:

The title refers to the title of a play written by one of the book's main protagonists, "Billy" (Wilhelmina) Gertz. She has written about a terrorist attack on a train in Chicago, but nobody is fooled. They know it is really about the World Trade Center attack on Sept. 11, 2001. Thus this becomes, in a way, another 9-11 novel.

Billy was dating Gus when he was killed in the attack. He was on one of the planes. Gus's sister Leslie had become very fond of Billy and believed that Billy was suffering from Gus's death even more than she was. It was difficult if not impossible for Billy to set the record straight - that she had been contemplating breaking up with Gus, was not in love with him any more. Over time the burden of keeping this secret became unbearable and ultimately it came out in the play. Well-disguised yet still clearly the message, a message of ambivalence at best.

Meanwhile, the star of the play, Rafe, assumes a larger role outside the theater, and Sam, friend of Leslie's, starts to take a deep interest in Billy after initially assuming they had nothing in common. But he holds onto an attraction to Leslie too, who is married.

The complications serve, in their way, to simplify the situation, to bring a sense of clarity.

One of the aspects of the book that I found especially appealing was the way the play was written and how it affected people. Live plays differ from films, especially in that they tend to be wordier, more involved in thought than frantic action. Conversation reaches a different level in a play, a level we might hope to reach in our lives. As a big fan of "edgier" plays, both from the past and the present, I found this play and its effects believable, consistent with my own experience.

"A book is a mysterious object, I said, and once it floats out into the world, anything can happen. All kinds of mischief can be caused, and there's not a damned thing you can do about it. For better or worse, it's completely out of your control."
