A bit twee, and very flowery prose, but surprisingly enchanting. Another BBC Big Read ticked off.

Thanks bigcurlyloz for this wishlist book which was reserved for me at the Swindon Unconvention.

I can't remember exactly why I put this down on there - think it may have been one of the BBC's big read list. However, I think it'll be nice for a non-taxing relaxation read.

Like bigcurlyloz said - very twee:-) At the start I found Anne (with an 'e') SOOOO irritating. Would she please just shut up a minute! But gradually I warmed to her, and yes, I was struggling not to cry on the bus whilst reading the last few chapters.

My Canadian colleague has recommended I try the rest of the series. I might just do that.

Picked up at the monthly meeting at Biblios. Read it a long time ago, but might give it another read to see how I like it now. It was one of my favourites as a child!

Journal Entry 12 by teapot at Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Friday, February 27, 2015
It does actually hold up reasonably well 20 years after my last read! Though there were a lot of things I hadn't really considered before... like how did Anne ever get the chance to read all those trashy romance novels considering she had to look after three sets of twins and was basically a maid for her foster family? And how did she never learn to shut up every once in a while? Presumably her adoptive parents or the asylum workers wouldn't have tolerated her incessant chatter, so you'd think she would have lost her habit of blurting out whatever crossed her mind and expect people to understand. Anyway, these are all very minor silly quibbles. It is actually a really nice book and I particularly liked the slow-paced earlier chapters depicting everyday life and customs of the day.

I had 50 minutes to spend i Stockholm, between arrival and departure of my trains. I took a short walk to espresso house to see if there were any new books, and found this. I loved the story of Anne when I watched it on TV as a kid, so I'd really like to read it now.
