I found this good-condition softcover at the Used Book Superstore in Burlington MA, and nabbed it for another release copy. This volume has the handsome-but-lazy Shigure (the zodiac dog) on the cover.

This volume picks up after Volume 3 with the story of young Tohru and her life with the zodiac-cursed Sohma family. (The curse? Each of the 13 cursed individuals will transform into their particular zodiac animal when hugged by a member of the opposite sex who is not also a member of the Sohma family. This is played for humor most of the time, but it's clearly not something the family wants known, and could be awkward - or worse - if it happened in public.)

I like the artwork in the series, especially some of the chapter-heading illustrations; this one opens with a drowsy Shigure gazing blearily at an alarm clock and muttering "still plenty of time before I have to get up". He's very... um, sexy. {grin}

The story proper involves a new semester at school, in which two more Sohmas join the student body: Hatsuharu (zodiac sign: the cow), and the adorable Momiji (rabbit), with the latter choosing to appear in a girl's uniform even though he's a boy. Both of the new students fall foul of the class president, who is outraged by the girls-uniform situation and even more annoyed at Haru's black-and-white hair, which he assumes is dyed. (The method Haru uses to convince him that it's natural is pretty funny.)

Amid all this turmoil, plus the usual arguments between Yuki (rat) and Kyo (cat), Tohru is astonished to see yet another Sohma: Akito, the clan's leader, turns up - and, to Tohru's surprise (since she's heard many horror stories of Akito's treatment of other family members) seems quite affable to her. But when Yuki shows up, Akito's comments to him bring back horrible memories, and Tohru actually steps in to break things up. How often does anyone push back at Akito???

Later on in this volume, Tohru meets still another Sohma - who's already in snake form when she first sees him. Turns out it's Ayame, Yuki's older brother, and a friend (to judge by the teasing) of Shigure. But Yuki's reaction to Ayame's appearance isn't very positive, so there must be yet another layer of troubled family dynamics.

And speaking of troubled families, we learn more about sunny little Momiji's family - and it's heartbreaking. If ever a character needed a hug, it's this one, even if it does make him turn into a rabbit... [I'll pause to sniffle a bit here. It really is very sad, even though Momiji copes as well as he can.]

Another enjoyable (if tear-jerking) visit with one of the most messed-up families in manga - plus some funny bonus material and helpful notes.

[There's a TV Tropes page for the series, with lots of info - and spoilers, most masked but some not, so read with care! And do check out the entertaining anime.]
