The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America

The 1893 Chicago World Fair seemed to be cursed from the beginning. Architects were reluctant to sign-on, the buildings were behind schedule, the weather was uncooperative, labor strikes were rampant, and at least one of the men in leadership roles was always too ill or recovering from illness to be of much help. Then there were the accidents. All the while, young women were disappearing without a trace in the city of Chicago and no one knew why. The writing is excellent and the story gripping. A terrific book!
