Hard Boiled Angel: Blue Angel 1
7 journalers for this copy...
I picked this up on sale because of the cover art and description. It was not quite what I expected, but I definitely enjoyed it. There are points that feel dated (the fashion is very early 90's!) and there are some aspects that are far from politically correct, but it was a fun enough romp that I wasn't held up as I read. The pacing is very good, which is pretty much essential to a cop drama. The art took some getting used to, but I actually liked the unique style. The character design and shading style feels influenced by 60's/70's manga, but the layout style and expressive exaggeration of facial features are things I typically associate with manhwa.

it's always interesting to read manhwa and compare it to manga. in this case this manhwa feels pretty old-school, although it's not clear when it was originally published. the stories have a nice noir feel, but it's kind of odd that it's juxtaposed with very slapstick humor (reminiscent of the early _dragon ball_ manga). i'm not entirely convinced by the hybrid tough cop/femme fatale lead character, and the stories are pretty thin and full of the usual crime series tropes, but it was still generally entertaining overall.

This came back in my manga & graphic novel book box.
I really didn't care for this manhwa. I didn't like the way the story portrayed the main character, I didn't care for all but one of the story arcs. I did finish it, and I'm glad that I did because the last of the four stories in this collection was really enjoyable.
Thanks for including this in my manga & graphic novel book box, as I probably wouldn't have picked this up on my own. Even though it wasn't my cup of tea I'm glad to have tried it :)

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
adding to my manga & graphic novel book box.
I'm claiming this from the Manga and Graphic Novel bookbox (bookbox journal here).
I wasn't sure I was going to like this one, as it opened with a really nasty tale of a stalker/rapist whose every scene was shudder-inducing - but then Detective Jiran showed her strength and took him down in highly satisfactory fashion. (I did think she was a bit harsh on the other victim, but from what we glimpse of her own back-story I'd say she's earned the right.)
I liked the flashback to her early days as a cop, unafraid to confront the boys-club boasting. And she displays some flashes of humor that were welcome after the rather grim beginning. There were some good twists in the cases, too, especially the "Ah Voh Puc" story, where people would swap murder-targets a la "Strangers on a Train" - that one brought in more of Jiran's back-story, and had some intriguing elements of its own. The final case in this volume brings in a troubled kid, who makes a good foil for Jiran.

A woman with a mean sword,
and to be honest
not a great personality either.

I'm pretty sure I've read this book before, but I can't say I really remembered any of it when I re-read this. LOL
The series actually reminds me a lot of the Crying Freeman series. Kind of a very similar theme with the main character being insanely toughened, cool and untouchable.
Obviously there are a lot of elements that are highly unlikely or irrational given the environment, time and place. But if you suspend belief oh, it's a fun enough for you to take as pure entertainment. :)
