Welcome to Purgatory. Chuck Palahniuk style.

After a botched Halloween ritual, Madison Spencer, the snarkiest dead girl in the universe, finds herself trapped in Purgatory, otherwise known as Earth. The upside: she is no longer subject to physical limitations (she can pass through doors and walls). The downside: well, she's still dead. Her first stop is her parents' luxurious apartment, where she encounters her grandmother ghost. For Madison, the encounter triggers memories of the awful summer she spent upstate. As she revisits the painful truth of what transpired over those months, her saga of eternal damnation takes on a new and sinister meaning. It turns out, Madison and her parents have always been key elements of Satan's master plan—doomsday.

One for the fans of pitch-black humor. Good fun and an easy read.

I'm now offering this as a Bookray.

This has arrived safely in the Swiss Alps, thank you. I'll be in Scotland early next month, and I see this should travel there next, so perhaps I'll send it from there. Thank you for sharing this book and for sending.

I signed up for this bookcrossing ring even though I hadn't read the first -I'm not sure I realized it was a sequel. I think I can easily say that if I had done my homework a bit better and read an excerpt for example, rather than just the amazon review, I would probably not have signed up.
If it had not been here as a ring, I probably would not have finished it. Reading the Goodreads reviews, I rather regret that I didn't see to it that I could read the first, first. I might have appreciated that one more. This one was so not my cup of tea.. I did not find what was surely meant to be humor in any way funny, I accept that perhaps this was meant to be read on a whole other level, but just found it all quite dreadful. I often comment that I was obviously born lacking the "prank gene" - I rarely appreciate pranks, and I think this form of humor may be closely related to that.
I am grateful to have had this sent to me and am glad to have been able to check out this popular author via bookcrossing, but I don't think I'll be picking up any others by him any time soon.
I'll be heading to Scotland in ten days and as this goes next to the UK, the plan is to post it from there.

Thanks to faerie-glen for starting this bookray and including me in it and to penelopewanders for sending it to me.

I've read Chuck Palahniuk's first 9 novels: Fight Club (1996), Survivor (1999), Invisible Monsters (1999), Choke (2001), Lullaby (2002), Diary (2003), Haunted (2005), Rant (2007) and Snuff (2008) but for some reason haven't read anything since, it's not that I didn't want to but I found I read less and was reading books chosen by the book club that I help run.

Anyway it's great that I've now got this and I can't wait to read it and fall in love with Chuck's writing all over again.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Sorry it's taken a while, I didn't realise until it arrived that it was the second book in the series so had to read Damned first, also had a few other book commitments.

Anyway that said it's now done. I really enjoyed although I think Damned was the better of the two books.

It's now on it's way to book_drunkard in Osgood. Thanks so much for including me in this bookring.

I probably would have loved this book when I was twelve years old, it reminds me of a playground game we used to play entitled - "What's grosser than gross?"
Anyway, what I had thought was going to be a laugh out loud type of book was a disappointment to me.
The first book - "Damned" - I found only slightly better than this one, so, maybe, I just don't *get* Chuck Palahniuk's certain style of humor.

I'm claiming this paperback from the Halloween bookbox - a poignant selection, as it was registered by BCer Ghanescha, whose untimely passing earlier this year saddened the community.

Later: I've enjoyed some of the author's other works, including Survivor and the over-the-top-gruesome Haunted, so I thought I was prepared for this one {wry grin}. Palahniuk's brand of gross/grisly/utterly-irreverent writing isn't always easy to take, and in this case I found it initially darkly hilarious but then increasingly... tedious? Oh, sure, some of the bits were surprising and effective - the scene with young adoptee Goran and the pony was awful and yet a stellar example of clueless people-of-privilege completely failing to see their gifts of bounty from the viewpoint of the kid they're trying to help. But I found the ongoing attempts of lost-in-purgatory Madison to figure out what's going on to be a bit boring after a while; just didn't feel invested in the characters or the situation. [Don't know if having read the preceding book Damned would have helped or not, but from this one I'm not motivated to hunt it up.] Definitely not to all tastes, and not (IMO) his best work, but perhaps someone else will enjoy this one!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Since this book bears one of Ghanescha's favorite bookplates, a TARDIS-themed one, I had to leave this book inside this handsome - and nearly five feet tall! - TARDIS-themed Little Free Library, on a pre-snowstorm release run. Hope someone enjoys the book!
