A solid entry in Henry's Alaska mystery series. As with many of the cozies that I read, I tend to enjoy other aspects of the book more than the mystery itself. In this case, I love the historical information that Henry includes (she does her research, that's for sure!) and the Alaskan setting. Some of the descriptions of the natural world are really marvelous. I enjoy the characters, too, although I always want Jessie Arnold to have more time on the page than she does. I suppose that makes sense, though, since Alex is the actual sleuth!

All in all, I liked this one enough to continue with the next in the series at some point.

Reserving for the Mystery / Thriller VBB.

Description from Amazon:

"History is repeating itself one hundred years later on Alaska's breathtaking Inside Passage. Re-creating the famous Voyage of 1897, the Spirit of '98 is setting sail from Skagway, Alaska, en route to Seattle, Washington, carrying two tons of Yukon gold. Alaska State Trooper Alex Jensen and his love, famous female 'musher' Jessie Arnold, are among the excited participants. The Grim Reaper is a passenger as well.

Dressed in period costume, Gold Rush buff Alex Jensen is only too happy to be representing the Troopers on this historic journey through a giant maze of scenic straits, harbors, and inlets. But the strange disappearance -- and probable death -- of a crew member pulls Alex rudely back to the present. As the only law officer in the vicinity, it is now his duty to unravel a twisted skein of lies, greed, and lethal shipboard secrets -- before the Spirit's fateful encounter with murderers aboard a stolen ketch writes a grim new chapter in Alaska's history."

Read this week and enjoyed 😊. IMO, it a well plotted mystery with a wide variety of interesting characters and red herrings. Oddly enough, since I love learning about places and times through cozies, that was a large part of what I liked least about this book. There was way too much telling not showing. Yes, she did her research, but many times I felt as if I were reading dry encyclopedia entry.
Agree with you, ReallyBookish, would like to see Jessie have morepage time. Supporting actors I really enjoyed: Dallas and Lou.
