Silk

The year is 1861. Hervé Joncour is a French merchant of silkworms, who combs the known world for their gemlike eggs. Then circumstances compel him to travel farther, beyond the edge of the known, to a country legendary for the quality of its silk and its hostility to foreigners: Japan.
I am not going to lie, although this is a well praised book and almost a classic, I didn't really "feel" for this book. The writing is poetic, but it also makes things rather unclear so I sometimes have no clue what is going on (or not.) Overall, it's an intriguing story, but I didn't like the "letter" - unlike the rest of the story, it is too descriptive, too blatant.

I first heard about this book at the bookswap game today, then I found it at the buffet table. Serendipity!
I really liked the book, the subtleties as the story unfold. The story really did pull me into it, and I loved the way it is written. However, I do agree with azuki about the letter, it didn't fit the rest of the book.
My May book is heading it's way out in the world. Enjoy!
Thank you sooo much!
I read this novel some time ago, and I am looking forward to re-reading it.
Thanks for the lovely nostalgic postcard too... :)
